Ex-Pats in Columbia
Columbia is becoming a very desirable destination for ex-pats from around the world. North Americans are flocking here for all the right reasons. Columbians are some of the friendliest people in the world and you can’t beat the cost of living.
It’s a great place to settle for those who have found their limited income in places like the US and Canada getting tighter with each passing year. Getting accustomed to the laissez-faire lifestyle in Columbia is probably the biggest obstacle a person will confront.
Spanish is the main language spoken and frankly, you won’t really need to worry about many others. There are several indigenous groups who speak among themselves, plus a smattering of Creole and Romani. You’ll find English spoken in the major tourist areas and island spots but you’ll need to keep the handy dandy translator book out for venturing too far away from the main hubs. That’s okay though; you wouldn’t have planned to head this far south if you didn’t want to learn some Spanish, right? And like any Latin country, the people may laugh when you try to speak their tongue, but they are laughing with you, not at you.
Depending on your reason for moving to Columbia (retiree, job relocation or curiosity) you will most likely have a location in mind. The main regions inhabited by ex-pats are Bogotá, Santiago de Cali (commonly shortened to Cali) and Medellin, all with relatively diverse climates. Once you choose the neighborhood that suits you, it’s time to settle down.
